How to Make Bombice easily at home

Looking for some Balkan baking inspiration? Here is a really easy, no bake recipe for “bombice”, a delicious, sweet treat you can make at home.

Bombice are literally “little taste bombs” that are found all over the Balkans as well as in many other European countries. Each country has their own take on them so there are many different variations.

One popular version of Bombice is chocolate bombs with hazelnuts. These are basically balls of dark chocolate coated with delicious, ground hazelnuts. Bombice are so simple to make, no baking is required and they can be ready in less than 30 minutes.

Little Taste Bombs in the Balkans

Bakeries across the Balkan Peninsula sell their take on these little taste bombs. When we are in the Balkans, it’s considered a challenge to find a new variety. So far we have tried nut (almond, hazelnut and pistachio), coconut, chocolate dusted, sugar dusted, chocolate vermicelli and hundreds and thousands. They can also vary depending of the type of alcohol used. Rum is the most common but we have also found cherry liqueur and, of course, there is the non-alcoholic option.

When to eat Bombice

Bombice go perfectly with coffee or tea in the afternoon or for any other sweet occasion. The problem is, it’s difficult to have only one!

These little treats are also served on special occasions. Usually a few different types are prepared and served in small decorative paper cases and beautifully arranged on a serving platter. This way guests can sample a variety of different bombice. Of course, it will be necessary to refill the platter on a regular basis!

  • 150g of dark chocolate (or cooking chocolate)
  • 150g of powdered sugar
  • 1 egg white
  • 1 teaspoon of rum/alcohol of choice (or lemon/orange juice for the soft version)
  • 80–100 grams of desiccated coconut (for the coating)

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Cover your hands with the oil so that the mixture does not stick to them
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine all the ingredients. Mix everything thoroughly with your hands to make the combination even and soft
  3. Take a small amount of mixture in your hand and form small balls (roughly the size of a gobstopper)
  4. Roll them in the coconut
  5. Leave the bombice in a dry and cool place to harden
  6. Once set, transfer to a sealed container and store in a cool, dry place
  7. Try not to eat them all at once
