How Expensive is Argostoli

Not nearly as expensive as other European, or even Greek, locations! It is easy to find a good quality meal for €10-15 and things like gyros can be found for even less.

Accommodation can get a bit pricey in the summer but there are also options for lower budgets. To stay in the town can cost an average of €150 per night We stayed in a village called Minea and paid €50 and just took the bus into Argostoli.

Transport is cheap with local buses costing a flat €2 to go anywhere in the local area. Transport around the Island by bus was relatively cheap – we paid €5.80 for a bus all the way to Fiskardo in the north of Kefalonia.

Flights can be found relatively cheaply from most European cities – if you are flexible. We paid around €90 return from Edinburgh in August.

What is the Weather Like?

Kefalonia has a Mediterranean climate and loads of sun throughout the year. Summers are hot but there is always an island breeze. The temperature dips over the winter months and it can be rainy, there can even be a dusting of snow on the mountains!

When to Visit

Argostoli is at its busiest in the summer months. The sun is out and everything is open. However, that of course means there are more crowds. Saying that, it is not really that touristy compared to places like Corfu or Athens.

The shoulder seasons are cheaper and quieter and the sun is not so scorching. This would be our preferred time to visit.

How Long to Stay in the City

We stayed in Argostoli for five days. While there is a lot to do in the town, it is also a great base for exploding the rest of the island. The town itself has enough to keep you busy for two to three days. However, if you plan to venture out then we would recommend a minimum of five days. If you intend to enjoy the incredible beaches, and move at a slower pace, a week to ten days might suit you better.

Yes, absolutely! We used Argostoli as a base to explore the rest of Kefalonia. However, the town itself was well worth visiting. Especially if you enjoy a scenic island town with plenty to do.
