Tirana to Prizren – The Ultimate Tirana Day Trip!
If you have an extra day in Albania’s capital, a day trip from Tirana to Prizren, Kosovo is a great way to spend the day. Kosovo is one of Europe’s newest countries, so why not visit one of Kosovo’s oldest and most charming cities. Prizren is definitely an undiscovered gem in the far east of geographical Europe. In this post, we show you how to take an awesome day trip from Tirana to Prizren, including transport details, costs and times, and why you should make this incredible trip.
How to get From Tirana to Prizren
Getting from Tirana to Prizren is not particularly difficult. However, it may require a little planning. We’re here to help! There are a few different options for travel. Whichever you decide, you will have an amazing time in Prizren.
Tirana to Prizren by Bus
Travelling from Tirana to Prizren is pretty easy and convenient by bus. The bus departs from Tirana International Bus Terminal (behind the Sports Palace) and there are about 5 departures per day. The journey takes between 2.5 and 3 hours depending on the service you choose and on the extent of the Tirana traffic. If you buy your tickets online, you will need to print off the ticket to show it to the driver. Online versions of the ticket won’t be accepted. We just paid on the bus and it was actually cheaper anyway! To book online will cost €30 for a return and we paid 2,500Lek on the bus (around €24.50). However, you will need to pay in cash as cards are not accepted.
If you have done much travelling around Albania, you might be pleased to learn that this journey provides a coach rather than a furgon (minibus). There is plenty of space and even a USB point onboard. If you have luggage to go in the hold, that will incur an extra charge, so make sure you have some change for that too.
There is a great wee coffee shop near the bus station called Le Bon. We always stop in here for coffee and delicious croissants for the bus journey.
The coach made one stop, around halfway, where there was time to refresh, use the facilities and stock up on snacks!
Crossing the Border by Bus
Just before arriving at the Kosovo border, the driver’s assistant will come to collect everyone’s travel documents. He then hands them to border control who will check them. Hopefully all is well and the bus will pass through without any issues. The documents will then be handed back out and the bus gets on with the journey.
Depending on the bus company you travel with, you may need to change onto a furgon at a petrol station just outside Prizren. This is included in the ticket price and the driver – and other passengers – will keep you right. The furgon takes about 10 minutes to get to Prizren Bus Station.

This route involves going through a pretty long and impressive tunnel. Inevitably, this incurs tolls. For a car, the fee is €5 and you can pay by cash or card, or even a pass, as long as you get in the correct lane.

Tirana to Prizren Day Trip – Climb up to Prizren Fortress
This hilltop castle overlooks the city of Prizren and the river running through it. Only a shell is left today but it is certainly worth the hike up the hillside to see the amazing views across the city. There has been a fort on this location since the 6th century so it is a really beautiful historic site. It is also and excellent location for taking some panoramic photos. A visit to this fortress is certainly one of the best things to do in Prizren.
Visit Sinan Pasha Mosque
The Sinan Pasha Mosque is one of the most beautiful mosques we have visited. It was built in 1615 by Sofi Sinan Pasha, bey of Budim and sits right in the centre of the city. In the courtyard there is a beautiful fountain for ablutions and some little stalls.
Visit the Serbian Orthodox Church
Also known as Our Lady of Ljeviš, this Church was built in the 14th century by the King of Serbia and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The stunning frescos inside have been sadly damaged. However, it is currently being restored to its former glory.
Tirana to Prizren Day Trip – Walk Across the Stone Bridge
The Ottoman stone bridge in Prizren is a fantastic view point in the city. Take a walk over the old stone crossing and gaze up the river or across to the Sinan Pasha Mosque or beyond, to the fortress. This is a great sport for taking photos in Prizren.
Do Some Shopping at ABI Çarshia
This upmarket, outdoor mall is located just near Prizren bus station. It’s a nice way to spend some time before taking the bus. There are many western shops and some nice cafes and restaurants to enjoy, as well as a cinema and bowling.

There are plenty of great restaurants in town. However, our favourite is te Syla with its traditional dishes and seating on the banks of the river. It is pretty much in the centre of town and the staff are friendly and efficient.
If you are looking to stop for a coffee, try Ponte Coffe and More 2. The coffee and snacks are way better than the name!

Spring and autumn are beautiful as the weather is pleasant and the town is still quite quiet.

What Currency do I need?
Kosovo uses the euro as it’s de facto currency. However, this has not been done in agreement with the EU. ATMs are available around the town centre if you do not have cash. Some of the larger restaurants and shops will take credit card but we would always recommend checking with them first.

What to Avoid when Travelling from Tirana to Prizren
As with almost everywhere you visit around the world, there are precautions to be taken. These events are very unlikely so do not let it put you off, but it’s always a good idea to be well prepared when travelling to an unfamiliar land. Here are some basic guidelines to keep in mind.
Political Rallies
It’s advisable to avoid areas where demonstrations and large gatherings are taking place and follow the instructions of local authorities. It is also wise to monitor local media for information on ongoing demonstrations.
Caution when Hiking
Always pay attention to signs indicating the possible presence of landmines and stay on paved roads. Make sure you avoid open fields, road shoulders and unmarked trails and report anything suspicious to local authorities.

Driving in Kosovo
The most dangerous thing about Kosovo is the driving. If you are brave enough to hire a car you must take out full insurance and avoid busy areas. The roads in rural areas are sometimes no more than dirt tracks so plan your route carefully.
Organised crime networks
This is the most talked about safety risk in Kosovo. However, as a tourist you are very unlikely to be caught up is this activity and will therefore be perfectly safe.
The Language in Kosovo
Around 90% of Kosovans speak Albanian, with the rest speaking Serbian, Bosnian and even Turkish. In the cities, many younger people speak a little English but it is useful to learn a few phrases in Albanian. Like all Balkan languages, it is certainly not an easy language for English speakers. However, any attempt is greatly appreciated by the locals. Here are a few words to try out:
Hello Tungjatjeta (toon-jah-TYEH-tah)
Please Ju lutem (yoo LOO-tehm)
Thank you Faleminderit (fah-lehm-meen-DEH-reet)
Yes Po (poh)
No Jo (yoh)
Goodbye Mirupafshim (meer-oo-PAHF-sheem)
